Overview

We are looking for a Planer Supervisor to join our team at the Randle, WA facility. 

The ideal candidate would be responsible for leading the Swing Planer production team in a safe manner, while producing a quality product that meets the set goals. This person is responsible for managing the workflow, troubleshooting when necessary, and assisting in the overall improvement of the operation. This person will assist in the development of current employees, help train new employees, and fill-in as necessary. 

  • Work schedule: Swing shift (4:30 PM-3:00 AM), Monday through Thursday, flexible as needed. Overtime is expected when necessary.
  • Wage: Salary Exempt, $75,000-$95,000 annually, DOE. Production bonuses are possible for every employee each month, based on the plant site's target goals.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Swing Planer production team in a safe manner.
  • Fill in at machine centers as needed for break rotation, vacations, and other absences. 
  • Be alert to bottlenecks and flow problems that may occur in the Planer.  When flow problems are identified this person must be willing to assist as necessary.
  • Perform lumber quality control checks.  Spot checks will also be required whenever a fellow operator identifies a potential quality problem. 
  • Learn and have an understanding of finished lumber sizes / lengths, grades, package sizes, and dry kiln process.
  • Follow Company lockout procedures, comply with all company work and safety standards, while practicing safe work habits.
  • Operate machinery in a safe manner so injury does not occur to operator or any employee in the area.
  • Communicate temperature and the morale of the crew to the Superintendent, Managers, and the HR Department.
  • Recognize, communicate and address quality and/or size problems to supervisor and/or fellow teammate in a timely manner and see that they are corrected to the best of your ability.
  • Notify Superintendent of any problems that arise during shift.
  • Must attend pertinent meetings.
  • Must be willing to attend any training necessary to upgrade performance.
  • Hold regular crew meetings to discuss the monthly training topic.
  • Report incidents accordingly with proper documentation.
  • Track employee’s vacation time.
  • Enter payroll time in an accurate manner.
  • Assist in the hiring process as well as disciplinary procedures.
  • Train employees as assigned.
  • Trouble shoot all machine centers in the Planer for mechanical quality concerns.
  • Operate all operator controls, monitors and computers necessary to perform general job description.
  • Perform calibrations on scanners and machine centers as needed.
  • Perform size up on machine centers as needed.
  • Assist with routine maintenance of the machine centers.
  • Assist maintenance personnel during breakdowns.
  • Must be willing to assist with clean-up of the mill when not in production.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years preferred of supervisory experience in lumber manufacturing.
  • Strong understanding of business and operational procedures is a must.
  • Basic computer skills are essential.
  • Good communication skills through speech, writing and hearing.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and organizing skills coupled with interpersonal communication skills is essential. 
  • Will be a leader. Will demonstrate a high degree of integrity. Will be honest and forthcoming with information.
  • Will innovate techniques in problem solving and by extension, promote innovation in the crew
  • Will have a positive attitude about daily activities and project a positive image to the crew.
  • Will be a team builder and promote teamwork. Will work well with peers and contribute to the success of the company.
  • Will be inquisitive and always looking for ways to do things better.
  • Maintain a current Hampton PIT authorization and a current First Aid/CPR certification. 
  • Has taken or will be taking the next available Lumber Quality Class as well as the Grading Class and has completed them.
