Overview

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:

 

The forklift operator determines what lumber is required for loading, prepares rail car/truck loading plans, locates and then hauls the correct units for loading. The operator then positions the lumber on the rail car/truck in accordance with the loading regulations. They also assist when necessary tie down and banding needed for the rail cars.

 

Load correct lumber per load list in a safe and productive manner so the truck or car will meet the legal weight restrictions. Tag or stencil loads correctly for shipments. Locate and stage lumber to be shipped. Help sort and stack lumber in the yard to better identify and separate products and sizes. Access computer to generate required paperwork for shipping and inventory information.

 

The person who fills this position needs minimal supervision and will take the initiation to assist other employees when necessary. Be willing to work overtime when needed. Perform preventative maintenance and maintain appropriate checklist.

Responsibilities

  • Have been through company PIT training class. 
  • Identify what items are to be loaded from load list.
  • Locate and select the correct lumber size, grade, length, number of units, etc.
  • Haul lumber from stack to truck in a safe and productive manner.
  • Determine the correct loading schematic for the car or truck to comply with the regulations.
  • Willing to work overtime as needed to meet shipping commitments.
  • Communicate with truck drivers to determine proper loading.
  • Communicate with car loaders to correctly position units on the car.
  • Determine the correct number of pieces of each length in random length loads.
  • Do basic math; i.e. total piece counts, add weights, add lengths, etc.
  • Perform daily forklift check.
  • Load correct lumber to accommodate weight distribution and restrictions.
  • Haul and stack lumber in a safe manner.
  • Stencil and or tag lumber with correct color and mark when needed.
  • Be able to identify the various stenciling of loads as to size and grade.
  • Operate forklift in a safe and productive manner.
  • Assist in organizing finished lumber yard.
  • Assist other forklift operators.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to utilize computers.
  • Other appropriate tasks that may come up.
  • Follow Company safety and work rules.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and maintain appropriate checklist.
  • Ability to climb up and work on top of loaded rail car.
  • Ability to throw cables to tops of Center Beam cars.
  • Ability to tighten cables on Center Beam Cars.

Qualifications

  • This individual must meet these requirements:
  • Be a trained operator in accordance with forklift training procedures.
  • Be willing to learn Lumber Track and Microsoft Excel.
