Overview

The Sawmill Supervisor will provide leadership, training and development to a team of operators by managing the mill flow, resources and shift team to meet established performance objectives.

Responsibilities

Safety Leadership

  • Lead and enforce all safety policies and safe work practices
  • Conduct safety meetings and shift safety engagement
  • Ensure lockout/tagout and safe operating procedures are followed
  • Lead incident response and corrective actions
  • Promote proactive hazard identification

Production Execution

  • Achieve shift production and recovery targets
  • Monitor and manage flow through all sawmill processes
  • Identify and remove bottlenecks quickly
  • Coordinate staffing and machine operation
  • Drive continuous improvement in uptime and throughput

Quality & Recovery

  • Ensure lumber meets size control specifications while minimizing manufacturing defects
  • Ensure rough green packages meet established standards
  • Monitor process consistency and correction of quality deviations

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead, coach, and develop operators and support personnel
  • Set clear expectations for performance and behavior
  • Manage attendance and performance issues
  • Support employee training and cross-training
  • Build team ownership of equipment and results

Maintenance Coordination

  • Coordinate repairs with maintenance teams
  • Support preventive maintenance execution
  • Ensure accurate communication of equipment issues
  • Help prioritize maintenance needs based on production impact

Operational Discipline

  • Maintain housekeeping and organization standards
  • Ensure SOPs and best practices are followed
  • Ensure shift handoff communication is effective
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 7 years sawmill experience
  • 3+ years leadership or supervisory experience preferred
  • Strong safety leadership mindset
  • Ability to lead teams in fast-paced environments
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Startup or greenfield mill experience preferred
  • Experience in lean manufacturing or continuous improvement
  • Maintenance/Reliability experience is a plus
